Ergonomic kneeler (prototype stage)
As an ecologist I have spent many hours
kneeling, squatting, or stooping near the ground doing vegetation monitoring
and butterfly egg counts. I am designing this kneeler to reduce the
discomfort associated with working on the ground and reduce
collateral damage to the vegetation within and outside research plots. Since
much of my work centers around rare plants and butterflies, reducing
disturbance and trampling of vegetation is an important consideration. You
will notice that this prototype is still in rough form but it is
fully functional and allows people try the concept and make suggestions
for improvement. I expect there are a number of professions that could use this
kneeler, including gardeners, archaeologists, biologists, and farm workers
to name just a few. I think anyone that spends multiple hours stooped over the
ground will find this kneeler beneficial.
I am interested in working with a company that can take this product beyond the prototype stage. Email me if you are interested.

The kneeler is adjustable for different sizes of people and it provides 3- 4 areas of contact to reduce pressure points. The body can rest on the knees, chest, bottom, and head. It is light and folds for easy transport. The addition of an umbrella protects the worker from both rain and sun.
A video showing the kneeler in the dynamic mode.
The kneeler in the dynamic mode allows the support post to move freely forward and back allowing the person to reach further than in the stationary mode (where the support post is attached to the kneeler). This mode also provides an opportunity for the user to move and stretch muscles. A bungee cord that goes between the legs keeps the chest/head sections from going too far.
